LGPL licens

Hej,

 

 

Jag jobbar på ett företag som gör en webbtjänst som vi säljer tillträde till för våra kunder. I denna mjukvara använder vi oss av ITextSharp 4.1.16 som går under licensen LGPL. För ett tag sen frågade jag företaget iText software vad det skulle kosta att uppgadera till version 5 som går under andra licensvillkor, AGLP.

 

Nu har de fått upp ögonen för att vi kör en gammal version och vill tvinga in oss i den nya versionen (som kostar skjortan) genom att skrämma oss att vi kör vår nuvarande version olagligt.

 

Är det någon som har koll på hur LGPL fungerar och om vårt scenario gör att vi inte får använda den version vi kör nu?

Jag fick följande svar från iText corp. idag via mail och är lite fundersam till hur jag ska svara:

 

I'm the Business developor of the iText Software Group who is the copyright owner of iText. Let me first say that it is our intent to build business relations and partnerships. As such we would look forward to discuss how iText can add value for XXX. Besides the iText Library we provide optimized solutions for the usage of PDF of PDF mobile and Tablets as well a for cloud deployments. I am sure we can find common ground for nice projects.

 

With respect to the licensing policy, I can confirm you the following :

 

As the copyright owner of iText we have exclusive statutory rights about the exploitation of our software. This includes the decision on who CAN use the open source version and who MUST use the commercial license.

 

As the copyright owner of iText we grant to producers of open source software the right to use our software using an open source license. This can be LGPL/MPL or AGPL depending on the version of the software.

 

As the copyright owner of iText we REQUIRE the producers of closed software or proprietary software to use a commercial license of iText.

 

As the copyright owner of iText we REQUIRE the producers of any software that change or remove the PDF producer line to use a commercial license of iText.

 

If the application is sold as closed source product you CANNOT use the open source license - LGPL or any other (older) version. Please note that we are the copyright holder of the iText software and that we make the final decision about which iText edition is right for your application.

Står det exempelvis något om "not for commercial use" eller liknande?

Nu ska man nog ta Wikipedia med en ganska stor nypa salt. Men dom detta skriver om iText och licensen.

In the end of 2009, iText version 5 is released under Affero GPL license. This license is drastically different from the previous license that iText had been distributed under, in that it requires anyone using iText 5 under a free license to provide the users with the full source of their application. Projects that do not want to provide their source code are required to purchase a commercial license for a non-disclosed price or they cannot upgrade to iText 5. (Projects can continue using previous versions of iText under the more liberal license without any changes.) [5]

Så om jag tolkar Wikipediaartikeln korrekt så bör du få fortsätta använda version 4.1. Men om du vill uppgradera till fem eller senare så måste du köpa en licens.

Jag har försökt hitta vilken version av LGPL som iText använde sig av i tidigare utan framgång... Dock så släpptes 4.1.6 (som är den vi kör btw) under 2009 och gällande LGPL var version 3 då. I denna

 

Kan det vara av vikt när jag började med mitt projekt? Om jag började efter version 5 var släppt eller innan alltså?

 

Det kanske är av vikt att säga att iText 4.1.6 släpptes med LGPL/MPL och jag har snöat in mig på LGPL som jag tyckte verkade vettig för oss? Är MPL mer restriktiv för företag på ngt sätt?
