Hej, är PC-ägare så jag kan inte så mycket om Mac.

 

Jag har hört att på äldre macar finns det något som heter Processor Direct Slot, är det motsvarande PCI?

 

Undrar också lite grann om NuBus, hur det funkar och så. Kanske någon har en bra länk om bussar i Mac.

PCI Slots and Cards

 

Over the years, PCs have sported diffrent types of expansion slots and compatible expansion cards, including those based on the ISA bus, the EISA bus, the VESA Local Bus (VL-Bus), and today's PCI bus.

 

On early Macintosh models, the most common slot type was known as the NuBus specification, which was created by Texas Instruments. NuBus never caught on outside the Macintosh world, where it was used for many years.

 

A few Macintosh models included highspeed epxansion slots called "processor direct slots" (PDS) instead of, or in addition of NuBus. Although fast, PDS slot designs varied by Macintosh model, making widespread acceptance difficult.

 

Several years ago, Apple eliminated both NuBus and PDS expanson slots from Macs in favor for the PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) bus that's also the standard in the PC world. As a result, many more card manufactures have created Macintosh versions of their cards (genereally by simply writing Macintosh drivers). The economies of scale also means that the prices on PCI cards for the Macintosh are often lower than prices for comparable NuBus cards.

 

Installing a PCI card in a Macintosh is essentially the same as installing one in a PC. Note, however, that the process of opening some older Macintosh models may be difficult. (Apple's most recent PowerMac's are extremly easy to open for installing new cards.) Refer to the Mac's manual for instructions on opening the case and installing the PCI card.

 

Don't assume that you can use a PCI card sold for use in a PC in a Macintosh. You may be able to, but check with the card's manufacturer first to confirm that driver software is available.

Tilläggas bör att de flesta modeller som har NuBus och PDS var lågrpismodellerna (som Centris, LC, Performa) men även dåtidens proffsmodeller som Quardra-modellerna. Quadra 950 hade till exempel 5 NuBus platser och en PDS plats.

 

Programmet Guru (version 2.9) listar alla Macintosh som hittills tillverkats, med minneskonfigurationer och utbyggnadsmöjligheter. Där anges också vilka modeller som hade NuBus och PDS.

Är det väldigt svårt att få tag på NuBus-kort nuförtiden?

Jag har nämligen funderimgar på att köpa en beg. Mac

Det kan vara svårt. Jag vet att det finns vissa godbitar dock, men det är nog inte billigt. Gör en sökning på "Nubus cards" eller liknande på Internet.

 

Vad är det för modell du tänker dig köpa? Det kanske kan vara värt att satsa nån tusenlapp eller så till och få en PCI-kortutrustad Macintosh?

Det är en LC 475, jag har som hobby att samla på mig äldre datorer, för att så småningom kanske starta ett datormuseum.

Så alla som har gamla macar att sälja (de ska dock vara fungerande), hör av er till mig,

kristerlund@hotmail.com. Pc är väl inte så intressant eftersom jag redan har en hög, det ska i såna fall vara en riktigt gammal typ 8086/8088.
